Preferred prey size.

Frogs are predators. They hunt visually so their prey must be moving and thus alive. Frogs have preference in prey type and size, shown by a number of stomach content studies. Dart frogs mainly feed on insects, though my strike at and occasionally eat; worms, spiders, and snails. If needed frogs will hunt smaller than preferred prey, but they seldom will eat larger than proffered prey. Being visual hunters frogs also recognize colors and patterns, on their insect prey, that signals toxins or anti-feedants.

The following is a guideline for food size. Food choice can be effected by more than just size. A high concentration of food my be shied away from as the frog my have a hard time tracking a single prey item in a writhing mass. Sudden changes in prey items may put the frog off hunting. Small prey items are more often taken when the animal has been put off larger ones.
